Microsoft plans to roll out Windows Phone 7.5, dubbed "Mango," in a week or two, in an attempt to beef up its sluggish software to compete with Android and iOS 5.
"Every Windows Phone will receive software from the handset manufacturer," Microsoft said in a blog post. "This matched and paired firmware has been painstakingly tuned so your phone -- and apps -- work with all the new features of Windows Phone 7.5."
In addition, HTC and Samsung plan to release new Mango devices in the fall.
Released last year, Windows Phone will get its first major update, adding hundreds of new features, such as multitasking capabilities, an updated version of Internet Explorer and deeper integration with Facebook.
Microsoft aims to beef up Windows Phone to better compete against Google's "Ice Cream Sandwich" version of Android and Apple's iOS 5.
The rollout will also coincide with Apple's highly-anticipated release of the iPhone 5, scheduled to make its debut on October 4.
